Most petrol engines use flat top pistons, some engines (e.g. direct injection diesel engines and new in-cylinder injection petrol engines) require a more complex shape at the top of the piston with a recess of some depth as part of the combustion chamber in order to improve combustion efficiency and reduce deflagration to a minimum in order to form the mixture. The recesses in the piston are called ring grooves and are used to mount the piston rings. The function of the piston rings is to seal against air leakage and to prevent oil from entering the combustion chamber.
