What Is a Car Shock Absorber?

Shock absorber, is used to suppress the shock and impact from the road when the spring absorbs the shock and bounces back. It is widely used in automobiles to accelerate the attenuation of frame and body vibration in order to improve the smoothness of driving. When passing uneven road, although the shock absorbing spring can filter the vibration from the road, the spring itself will have reciprocating motion, and the shock absorber is used to suppress this spring jump.

The damping system of a car is composed of a spring and a shock absorber together. The shock absorber is not used to support the weight of the body, but to suppress the shock when the spring absorbs the shock and absorbs the energy of the road impact. The spring plays the role of moderating the impact, changing the "large energy once impact" into "small energy multiple impact", while the shock absorber is gradually reducing the "small energy multiple impact".

If you have ever driven a car with a broken damper, you can appreciate the aftershock bounce that occurs after the car passes through every pothole and undulation, and the damper is used to suppress this bounce. Without the damper, the spring bounce cannot be controlled, and the car will have severe bounce when encountering rough roads, and loss of tire grip and traction when cornering due to the up and down vibration of the spring.
