Whats is Gasket?

Gasket is type of mechanical seal that fills the clearance between two mating surfaces, generally made by sheet materials. There are lots of different gasket in engines, for example head gasket, oil pan gasket and so on.

Around 1820, people use pack iron fillings, Sulphur powder and water to make a solid iron sulphate seal. During 1820 to 1840, lots of gaskets were made from pieces of rope called Oakum.


Around 1850, vulcanization technology was invented, this technology helped to invent heat resistant rubber gaskets.


Around 1899, asbestos gasket was invented and which dominated the gasket market for almost a century.


Around 1923, non-asbestos gasket was invented, but not so widely used.

In the 1960s Whitby Chandler Ltd began manufacturing compression rubber moldings , which accelerating the gasket development.

In the 1980s, usage of asbestos gaskets began to decrease because it related to mesothelioma and other pulmonary diseases.

In the early 2000s, asbestos was prohibited to use by law in some area.

Nowadays, gaskets are made from a variety of materials, like paper, rubber, silicone, metal, cork, neoprene, nitrile rubber, fiberglass, plastic polymers and etc.
